Microsoft has done a less than stellar job of explaining to the public how to get around the new interface, but it's not publicly available until next Friday. There's no dedicated single key that returns you to the Start screen. You can also use Win+C to open up the Charms bar, and then either tap or click on the Start screen charm. If your most recently used "app" was the Start screen, and you're in Desktop mode, the Windows (Win) key on your keyboard will take you back. If you're using a mouse, move the cursor to the lower-left corner and the Start screen thumbnail will appear. At the bottom of the list you'll see a Start screen thumbnail.
To get the Switch List to appear, swipe in from the left edge slightly and make a U-turn back to the edge. If you swipe from the left edge to the center, though, you'll jump into your most recently used app. Accessible from the left edge of your screen, the Switch List gives you a thumbnail list of your recent apps. Move the mouse down to the Windows icon, the Start button, and click or tap to return to the Start screen. Wait a moment, and the Charms will appear. If you've got a mouse, move the cursor to the upper-right-hand corner of your screen. If you're on a touch screen, you can do this by swiping in from the right edge. This will bring you back to a normal textual password prompt where you can use your normal password to login. If you forget your PIN, you can click on the Sign-in options link and click on the key icon. Simply enter your 4 digit PIN and you will be logged into Windows. When you next login to your account you will now be presented with a prompt to enter your PIN. Your PIN will now be activated and ready to use when you login to Windows. Once you are done entering your PIN, click on the Finish button.
To create your PIN, enter the same 4 digit PIN in each of the fields. When creating the PIN you are also allowed to use the same number twice. An invalid PIN would be 8a2& as it contains characters and symbols, which are not allowed.

On the above screen click on the Create a PIN button. When the search results appear, click on the Create or change PIN option to open the User Settings screen. To enable a PIN password, type pin at the Windows 8 Start Screen and then click on the Settings category as shown below. If you are on a Windows Domain, the ability to use a PIN to login to your account is disabled.
